SWADESH MANTRA – Swami Vivekananda

O India! With this unimportant reverberating of others, with this base impersonation of others, with this reliance on others, this servile shortcoming, this abhorrent disgusting savagery – wouldst thou, with these arrangements just, scale the most astounding zenith of civilization and significance?

Wouldst thou achieve, by methods for thy dishonorable weakness, that opportunity merited just by the overcome and the chivalrous?

O India! Disregard not that the perfect of thy womanhood is Sita, Savitri, Damayanti; disregard not that the God thou worshippest is the immense Ascetic of monkish life, the all- disavowing Shankara, the Lord of Uma; disregard not that thy marriage, thy riches, thy life are not for sense-

delight, are not for thy singular individual bliss; disregard not that thou workmanship conceived as a forfeit to the Mother’s sacrificial table;

disregard not that thy social request is but rather the reflex of the Infinite Widespread Motherhood; disregard not that the lower classes, the oblivious, poor people, the ignorant, the shoemaker, the sweeper, are thy fragile living creature and blood, thy siblings.

Thou overcome one, be intense, take strength, be glad that thou workmanship an Indian, and gladly declare, ” I am an Indian, each Indian is my sibling. ” Say, ” The insensible Indian, poor people and down and out Indian,

the Brahmin Indian, the Pariah Indian, is my sibling. ” Thou, as well, clad with however a cloth round thy loins gladly declare at the highest point of thy voice: ” The Indian is my sibling, the Indian is my

life, India’s divine beings, and goddesses are my God. India’s general public is the support of my earliest stages, the delight garden of my childhood, the sacrosanct paradise, the Varanasi of my seniority. ” Say, sibling; ” The dirt of India is my most astounding paradise, the benefit of India is my great, ” and rehash and implore day and night, ” O Thou Lord of

Gauri, O Thou Mother of the Universe, vouchsafe masculinity unto me! O Thou Mother of Strength, take away my shortcoming, take away my unmanliness, and make me a Man! “. Divine night
