Q:- “Sir, the chanting of God’s name is enough. The scriptures emphasize the sanctity of God’s name for the Kaliyuga. Is it sufficient ?”
Shri Ramakrishna:- “Yes, there is no doubt about the sanctity of God’s name. But can a mere name achieve anything, without the yearning love of the devotee behind it? One should feel great restlessness of soul for the vision of God. Suppose a man repeats the name of God mechanically, while his mind is absorbed in ‘woman and gold’. Can he achieve anything? The mere muttering of magic words doesn’t cure one of the pains of a spider or scorpion sting. One must also apply the smoke of burning cow-dung.”
“Therefore I say, chant the name of God, and with it pray to Him that you may have love for Him. Pray to God that your attachment to such transitory things as wealth, name, and creature comforts may become less and less every day.
प्रश्न:- महाराज, नाम से ही सब कुछ होगा। कलियुग में नाम की महिमा है। क्या ईतना काफी है?
श्रीरामकृष्ण:- हाँ, नाम की बड़ी महिमा तो है, पर बिना अनुराग के क्या हो सकता है? ईश्वर के लिए प्राण व्याकुल होने चाहिए। सिर्फ नाम लेता जा रहा हूँ, पर चित्त कामिनी और कांचन में है इससे क्या होगा?
बिच्छू या मकड़ी के काटने पर सिर्फ मन्त्र से वह अच्छा नहीं होता – उसके लिए कण्डे का ताप भी देना पड़ता है।
इसलिए नाम भी करो और साथ ही प्रार्थना भी करो कि ईश्वर पर अनुराग हो, और जो चींजे दो दिन के लिए है – जैसे धन, मान, देहसुख, आदि-उनसे आसक्ति घट जाय।
