The Following Is The History Of Jallikattu
Extract from Sri Velukkudi Krishnan swami’s words on Jallikattu in Srimad Bhaagavatham:
Kumban was Yashoda’s brother and Nappinnai was his daughter. He organized Eruthazhuvudhal (Jallikattu) event with 7 Kayla is and announced that whoever tames the bulls, can marry his daughter. Everybody knows that Sri Krishna wins the event and marries Nappinnai!
Hidden meaning: Why 7 Kaalais?
Our life is actually of 7 parts: Gardam (Inside womb )

In each part, we do paapam and punyam and that’s what the two horns of a Kaalai signifies (Kombu). We all have Ahamkaram (garvam) like Kaalai and our Aatman is Sri Krishnan who helps us control the Ego and makes us win. To showcase this, Jallikattu is performed.
Also, in Treta Yuga, Indra came as a Kaalai and sought the help of Kaakuthsa Chakravarthy (ancestor of Sri Rama) to help him win against asuraas. Sri Rama is also called as Kaakuthsa as he was born in the lineage of that great King!
In Srimad Bhaagavatham, the cow is compared to Bhooma Devi and Kaalai is considered to be Dharmam. Lord Shiva’s vehicle is also Nandi / Rishaba (Ox or Kaalai).
Eruthazhuvudhal (Jallikattu) is being played since time immemorial, as mentioned in our Puraanas and Ithihaasas !
