Long ago, there lived a powerful demon king called Ravana in Lanka. He was a very strong, rich & powerful king. He had defeated many kings in the battles & so they did not dare to approach or challenge him. But at the same time, Ravana was a great worshipper of Lord Shiva. Once, Ravana had the desire to get a ‘shiva linga’ from Lord Shiva himself. Hence, Ravana went to Kailash to fulfill his desire. The gracious Lord granted him the ‘shiva linga’ and said “By worshipping this linga, you will achieve great Siddhis and Power.
You will able to gain the straight of the Mantras & will become a very powerful, but on one condition. After evening if you keep this ‘Shivlinga’ on the ground, it will stay on the ground only. It will lose all its power and you won’t be able to gain any strength from it.” Sage Narada who was observing all this silently became worried.
He through Siddhis. He will start harassing the Gods & Gandharvas. Therefore, he approached Lord Brahma & Lord Vishnu. They said that Lord Ganesha will be able to help him. After sage Narada to keep Ravana by taking with him till the evening. Sage Narada as decided talked with Ravana for a long time. Ravana had the habit of performing his daily evening prayers. He also had the Lord Shiva’s words in mind. If will lose all its power Ravana was getting very disparate as sage Narada was contentiously talking with him. He told the sage to go away.
After sage Narada disappeared, Ravana was in a dilemma. He could not find anyone to hold the ‘shiva linga’ until he finished with his prayers. Just then, he saw a young Brahmachari passing by that way. Seeing this Ravana begged to that boy to hold the ‘Shivlinga’ till he finished with his prayers. The boy agreed to one condition. He said I am a small boy. My words to be will not be able to withstand the weight of the shilling, then I will call your name thrice. After that, if you do not come, then I will keep it on the ground. Ravana agreed to this and went to offer his prayers.

After some time, he began yelling, “Goodness ruler, I cannot withstand (manage) this weight. “then he called Ravana thrice. That boy was none other than Lord Ganesha himself.
He prevented Ravana from achieving those Siddhis and thus saved the gods. That is why he is called Vighneshwara that is the savior of difficulties. Let us pray to him so that he may grant us knowledge and lead us on the right path. The victory of Lord Ganesha.
